The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) was signed into law by President Obama on January 4, 2011. The purpose of FSMA is to give the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) new authorities in regulating the way food is grown, harvested and processed. The goal of FSMA is to ensure that the US food supply is safe by shifting the focus to preventing food contamination rather than responding to it. Many countries have similar bodies that regulate how food is handled in the process of bringing it to the consumer. For more information on Recalls, Market Withdrawals and Safety Alerts.
